Air spading is a service that is not provided by enough tree care professionals. Many species of trees growing in our urban soil tend to develop surface rooting that can direct themselves around the main stem of a tree. These are called girdling(choking) roots. Many times they are below the soil surface and unnoticed. Air spading is a process of using high compressed air to expose these roots without damaging vital tree tissues. Once we expose the root collar of the tree any girdling roots can be surgically removed. Girdling roots limit the flow of essential nutrients up and down the stem of the tree making it weak and vulnerable to insects and disease. Many times this can be the primary cause of plant stress. We highly recommend this service for almost every tree.
